Armory, 1910 122 E. Burlington |
|
The Armory was built by the Iowa National Guard by selling shares of stock to company members and from donations from a Citizens Group formed in 1908.
Members of Company M of the 54th Infantry of the Iowa National Guard, who donated half of their camp and drill pay, received one share of stock for every $5 donated.
The Armory served Fairfield well until a new armory was built on Stone Street in 1958.
Many, many, community events were held here, probably the largest being an appearance by Aimee Semple McPherson, one of the most famous female evangelists in the world.
In 1934 about 2500 people waited hours for her to arrive from Des Moines.
It was remodeled in 2004 to be used for community events.
