Oct 2009. The new Matkin Bridge is in place and the approaches have been built.
On Aug 31 construction began on the support piers for the new Charles William "Bill" Matkin Bridge over Highway 1 North, just beyond the MUM campus where the old Rock Island Railroad once crossed over the highway.
Bill designed many of the Loop Trail bridges and we are honored and delighted to be able to name this marvelous, rainbow-shaped bridge in his memory.
Floodlights will highlight the bridge in the evening hours.

Also, a tasteful and aesthetically pleasing plaza is on the west side of Highway 1, adjacent to the bridge.
Local artist Judy Bales had a hand in all the design elements of the plaza.
