Maintenance Day, May 3, 2014

Report from Chris Meyers, Maintenance Chairperson

I wanted to take some time to thank everyone for all of their hard work on Saturday for the 2014 Spring Maintenance Day! We accomplished a lot with 20 volunteers in a relatively short amount of time. As most people were working on a single project throughout the day, I thought I would highlight everything that was accomplished as not everyone got to see everything.

⚫  Mulching around mile markers/benches around the entire Loop.

⚫  Trimming (primarily from Lamson Woods to MUM campus and also in the Whitham Woods area.

⚫  Sanding/sealing of all the benches from Maasdam Barns clockwise to Whitham Woods. Also sanded/sealed picnic table in Whitham Woods.

⚫  Cleaned the Whitham Woods, Lamson Woods, and Pleasant Lake outhouses.

⚫  Swept gravel along Gear St. portion of the trail and at the railroad crossing north of Dexter. Got some sweeping done around Whitham Woods.

⚫  Picked up trash along the Dexter Soccer Complex

⚫  Sanded/sealed the gazebo at Lamson Woods/Neff Wetlands

The Trails Council could not be happier with the way the day went and how everything turned out. We had a great mix of experienced volunteers and some new blood eager to help out.

There are still a few items we plan to finish up in the coming month:

⚫  Clean the Cedar View Trail outhouse.

⚫  Finish sweeping gravel at Whitham Woods and seep gravel at Walton Lake.

⚫  Clean out the cobwebs and wasp nests from the kiosks and clean the window panes.

⚫  Repair netting on the bridges.

Some time in June or July when it isn't as wet, we will do deeper trimming along the trail so that we won't have to trim as often. At this time, we may also attempt sanding/sealing the bridges along the trail and tightening bolts on the bridges. A whole weekend could be spent in Lamson Woods alone on these projects.

Thanks again for your continued support and we look forward to working with all of you on projects/maintenance days to come!
